300 - rise of an empire (an epic fail?)

As a huge fan of the movie 300 (2006), i have to say something about the sequel film, rise of an empire, i just have to! Finally had a chance to catch up with the movie after the school exam.

First of all here's a simple comparison of both movie.

Gerard Butler        or     Sullivan Stapleton                  ?
King leonidas      or      Themistocles                         ?

Fighting on land   or      Sea combat                             ?
Brawn                or       Brain                                       ?
Spartans             or      Athens                                     ?
Warrior at birth   or      Farmers and painters                ?
Queen Gorgo      or      Artemisia                                 ?

Both movie have the same bloody slow-mo kinda fighting sequence.
But does rise of an empire gives the same epic feel as the latter?

Queen Gorgo
Queen Gorgo: Do not be coy or stupid, Persian. You can afford neither in Sparta!
Messenger: What makes this woman think she can speak among men?
Queen Gorgo: Because only Spartan women give birth to real men!

Queen Gorgo being Queen Gorgo, speaking like a true spartan lady.

Artemisia
Eva Green definitely showed versatility in acting here from acting as a bond girl alongside Daniel Craig in 007 Casino Royale, to a general leading the Persian army - Artemisia, goth/punk chick, greek by blood, persian at heart.

King leonidas
What more can you ask out of Gerard Butler, he played his role brilliantly, a part of me wished he didn't die in the heated battle against Xerxes and combine forces alongside the Athenians. But oh well, who am i to change the course of history.

Themistocles
Themistocles. An Athenian with Testitocles! Haha... get it..? ..... ..... ........................

The God king Xerxes
I really expected more from the Great God King Xerxes in rise of an empire. His character feels less scary and powerful compared to the 1st movie.

An epic scene from the movie 300 (2006)
Another epic scene
More epic scene @ the hot gates
Perhaps the movie 300 (2006) was the first of it's kind when it came out, the movie really captured my heart and attention especially through some of these epic scenes up above.

Them brainy Athenians and their flawless sea combat.
Personally i really like this scene and i dare say this is one of the more notable highlights in the entire rise of an empire movie.

In a nutshell : Not a fail but could have been much better.

  1. Not my kind of movie. Didn't hear anyone commenting on this one but a lot love "Divergent", it seems.
